"The interactive element of the show was brilliant, a great way to enhance children's learning through living history. The children thoroughly enjoyed the performance and it provided a great overview of the relevant aspects of WWII for a year 3 class. Thank you Appletree Theatre!!" - Crowcroft Park School
Appletree Theatre bring the sights and sounds of wartime Britain to life in this wonderfully interactive show. The pupils meet Irene May, a London housewife and her brother Arthur, an ARP Warden as they prepare to send their niece for evacuation.

As well as trying their hand at morse code with Arthur, and seeing how Irene has to struggle with wartime rations, pupils can also try their hand at rag-rugging and a brisk bout of military square-bashing.
And at some point, the pupils get caught in a simulated Air Raid - with the sounds of the Blitz all around them, they have to dive for cover along with Irene and Arthur into Anderson Shelters....
An amazing experience for children, who get to understand and appreciate just how different their lives would have been in 1940.
The session lasts approximately 2 hours, and can be fitted around a morning or an afternoon. To enhance the experience for the pupils, and to make them feel even more involved, we recommend asking children to try and dress up in 1940's costume - this can be as simple as a old jumper, or even a small cardboard box with string as a "gas mask". Teachers can also dress up - the children love this!
(we recommend this size of group in order for the pupils to get the most out of the interactive nature of the session. Should you have larger classes or groups, please contact us to enquire about booking multiple sessions)
“Just to say thank you so much for doing the WWII shows last week, the children thoroughly enjoyed them and learnt so much. I was really impressed with the range of resources that you brought in, they made it a really lifelike experience. We will certainly book you again!"
